The New Simplicity: Górecki, Pärt, and Tavener

TEACHING

ABOUT THIS CLASS

This course investigated the music of Henryk Górecki, Arvo Pärt, and John Tavener from a variety of perspectives, including its aspects of non-linear time and the role of silence. We discussed their respective relationships to the mystical traditions of the Eastern Orthodox Church and Polish Catholicism and the ways that political and cultural experience have shaped the creative stance of each composer.
