Conversations between Music and the Visual Arts
TEACHING
ABOUT THIS CLASS
This course considers how composers and visual artists have relied on each other’s media as sources of inspiration and innovative models from the beginning of the twentieth century to the present day. We explore this artistic reciprocity from a thematic standpoint, focusing on formal and metaphoric qualities of color, time and space. These themes are considered from a variety of historical and contemporary perspectives. The final projects encourage students to work with their peers in other departments on campus. The class welcomes music majors who are interested in the cross-disciplinary aspects of their disciplines, as well as non-majors.
